‘NY’s Most Wanted’ Suspect Shot Dead by US Marshals in NJ After Robbing Brooklyn Bishop

Career Criminal Suspected of Robbing Brooklyn Bishop Shot Dead by US Marshals

A career criminal, who was suspected of robbing flashy Brooklyn bishop Lamor Whitehead during a live-streamed service in 2022, was shot dead by US Marshals in New Jersey on Wednesday, according to law enforcement sources. Shamar Leggette, who was third on the list of New York’s most wanted fugitives, was killed during a confrontation with the Marshals who were attempting to arrest him for the armed robbery. The incident occurred at the MHO Inn and Suites in Monmouth Junction, where Leggette fired at officers as he exited the hotel. A woman who was with him surrendered to authorities before the shooting took place.

Identification and Church Robbery

Leggette, 41, was identified as a suspect in the brazen church robbery after his two accomplices were arrested. The trio of masked bandits stormed the Leaders of Tomorrow International Ministries in Canarsie during one of Whitehead’s live-streamed sermons. The robbers targeted Whitehead and his wife, stealing valuable items such as watches and jewelry. Footage of the heist showed the pastor hitting the floor as the armed men entered the church.

Bishop’s Response and Forgiveness

Whitehead, who is facing extortion and wire fraud charges himself, expressed forgiveness towards the three men who robbed him. He even offered to provide his services for Leggette’s funeral and extended condolences to his family. Whitehead described the brutality of the robbery, highlighting how Leggette had put a gun to his wife’s face and their eight-month-old daughter’s face. He emphasized the senselessness of the situation and the cycle of destruction that affects African American communities.

Leggette’s Criminal History

Leggette had a history of criminal activities, having served time in state prison for robbery, attempted murder, and weapons possession. He was previously convicted for the armed mugging of former NBA player Chris Childs and was wanted for attempted murder and robbery in connection to a Queens mugging. Additionally, Leggette was wanted in Rhode Island for shooting and robbing a man of jewelry.

Leggette’s accomplices in the Brooklyn church robbery have already pleaded guilty to the crime. The US Marshal’s Office has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the incident.
