NY Republicans inch closer to endorsing Trump

New York Congressional Republicans Endorse Former President Trump for 2024 Presidential Run

New York’s congressional Republicans have finally made their endorsements for the 2024 presidential race. Rep. Nicole Malliotakis and Rep. Nick LaLota have both announced their support for former President Trump. LaLota, a Navy veteran and member of the Armed Services and Homeland Security Committees, believes that Trump’s policies made the nation stronger and will clean up the mess created by President Biden. Malliotakis plans to make a formal endorsement at a later time.

However, four other members of the Republican delegation have yet to endorse any candidate for the 2024 presidential primary. This is surprising considering Trump’s overwhelming victory in the Iowa caucuses and the upcoming New Hampshire primary. Reps. Mike Lawler, Brandon Williams, Anthony D’Esposito, and Andrew Garbarino, along with Nassau County legislator Mazi Pilip, have not made their endorsements.

Lawler had previously expressed his desire for an alternative to Trump and suggested Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as a potential candidate. Some speculate that these Republicans may be hesitant to endorse Trump due to concerns about his legal troubles or hope that he will be convicted and removed from the ballot.

On the other hand, several New York congressional members have already endorsed Trump, including Reps. Nick Langworthy and Claudia Tenney. Rep. Elise Stefanik is even rumored to be a potential running mate for Trump in 2024.

The 2024 landscape does not look promising for Republicans in New York after the state’s highest court granted Democrats the opportunity to redraw the House districts. Democrats are expected to target vulnerable Republicans in their redistricting efforts. All four of the Trump holdouts are in seats that Democrats plan to contest in the upcoming elections.

New York State Democratic chairman Jay Jacobs expressed his satisfaction with the new districts and confirmed that the party would vigorously contest all the Republican fence-sitters. Pro-Trump insiders warned that continued fence-sitting could risk alienating the Trump base and potentially leading to lower voter turnout.

The Republican Party is already facing challenges with retirements, leadership crises, and the recent expulsion of former Rep. George Santos. These factors have left the party with a slim one-seat majority for 2024. Empire State Democrats are determined to take back the House and make Brooklyn Rep. Hakeem Jeffries the Speaker.

In conclusion, New York’s congressional Republicans are finally making their endorsements for the 2024 presidential race. While some have chosen to endorse former President Trump, others have yet to make their decisions. The upcoming elections will be crucial for both parties as they navigate redistricting efforts and strive to secure their positions in Congress.
