Nintendo’s Paper Mario Game Features Trans Character, Prompting Criticism of Gender Normalization

Nintendo’s Paper Mario game has faced criticism for featuring a transgender character, with some claiming it is an attempt to normalize gender fluidity among young individuals. The game, a remake of the 2004 GameCube edition, introduces Vivian, a male-to-female transgender character. In the original Japanese version, there was ambiguity surrounding Vivian’s gender, but the English version did not allude to it at all. However, in the 2024 English language remake, Vivian is revealed to be transgender.

Critics argue that including a transgender character in a game targeted at children is inappropriate and promotes an ideology that can cause harm. Women’s Forum Australia CEO Rachael Wong expressed concerns about the game’s influence on children, stating that it is not harmless fun but rather insidious indoctrination. She believes that by pretending men can be women, the game contributes to the pushback against gender ideology and medical transitioning of children.

On the other hand, some psychologists argue that while the game may aim to normalize gender diversity, it could be confusing for some children. Psychologist Jillian Spencer suggests that introducing the concept of gender identity different from biological sex in a game may lead to identity confusion in children. She warns that children can be highly suggestible, and seeing a prominent trans character may inspire some to proclaim a trans identity themselves, potentially putting them at risk of being placed on a medical pathway with long-term consequences.

Spencer also criticizes the game’s approach of demonizing Vivian’s sisters for not accepting her gender identity. She believes it sends a message to children that questioning the validity of gender identity is not allowed and that affirmation is the only acceptable response. Spencer argues that this approach does not improve children’s mental health or reduce suicide risk.

This controversy is not the first time Nintendo has introduced characters that challenge gender norms. Birdo from Super Mario 2 has been seen as an icon by the trans community for being a male-to-female trans character. The English game manual describes Birdo as a man who thinks he’s a girl and prefers to be called Birdetta.

In conclusion, Nintendo’s inclusion of a transgender character in Paper Mario has sparked debate and divided opinions. While some argue that it is important to normalize gender diversity, others believe it may confuse children and lead to potential harm. The game’s approach to affirming gender identity without question is also criticized for not allowing for critical thinking or open dialogue. As this discussion continues, it remains important to consider the potential impact on children’s mental health and well-being.
