Netflix Earnings Preview: What to Expect from Q2 Report

Netflix is set to unveil its second-quarter earnings report after the market closes on Thursday, and anticipation is palpable among investors and analysts alike. The streaming giant has opted not to provide quarterly subscriber updates, a move that has shifted the focus to other key performance indicators. With consumers increasingly tightening their budgets across various sectors, Wall Street will be particularly interested in how Netflix’s recent price hikes and the introduction of its advertising tier are impacting its financial health.

Analysts have set high expectations for the company’s upcoming report. According to LSEG, earnings per share are projected to reach $7.08, while revenue is anticipated to hit $11.07 billion. If these figures materialize, they would reflect a remarkable 45% increase in earnings year-over-year and a more than 15% rise in revenue compared to the same quarter last year. This follows a strong performance in the first quarter, where Netflix not only surpassed earnings expectations but also saw revenue growth of 13%, largely attributed to price adjustments made at the end of January.

Alicia Reese, an analyst at Wedbush, provided valuable insights into Netflix’s growth strategy in a recent research note. She emphasized the company’s potential to significantly boost revenue from its advertising tier in the coming years. “We believe that Netflix is well-positioned to accelerate ad tier revenue contribution over the next several years by adding and improving live events, enhancing its advertising solutions and targeting capabilities, expanding its ad partnerships, and broadening its content strategy,” Reese noted. This multifaceted approach suggests that while subscriber growth has been a primary driver of revenue, Netflix is looking to leverage price increases and ad revenues more aggressively moving forward.

Looking ahead, Reese predicts that while 2024 may continue to see subscriber growth as a key contributor to revenue, it is the price increases that will likely drive financial performance in 2025, with the ad tier expected to amplify revenues even further in 2026. Such projections indicate that Netflix’s contribution margin could significantly exceed current estimates, paving the way for substantial free cash flow.

The market’s response to Netflix has been notably positive, with shares climbing more than 40% since the beginning of the year and over 90% in the last 12 months. This remarkable performance underscores investor confidence in the company’s ability to navigate a rapidly changing media landscape, especially as competition intensifies and economic pressures mount.

As Netflix prepares for its earnings announcement, stakeholders will be keenly watching the results. There is a consensus that the company’s strategic initiatives, coupled with its ability to adapt to consumer demands, will play a crucial role in determining its path forward in the increasingly competitive streaming industry.
