Molson Coors Reports Nearly 3% Rise in Stock as Company Returns to Quarterly Profit

Molson Coors Beverage Co. has made a strong comeback, reporting a nearly 3% rise in stock after returning to a quarterly profit. The company’s net income for the fourth quarter was $103.3 million, or 48 cents a share, compared to a loss of $590.5 million, or $2.73 a share, in the same period last year. This impressive turnaround exceeded consensus estimates and was driven by adjusted per-share earnings of $1.19, surpassing the FactSet consensus of $1.12.

In addition to its improved financial performance, Molson Coors also experienced growth in sales, reaching $2.791 billion compared to $2.629 billion in the previous year. These figures not only exceeded expectations but also demonstrated the company’s ability to increase volume, share, and net sales across its three largest global markets.

One factor that contributed to Molson Coors’ success was the conservative-led boycott of rival brand Bud Light. The boycott was sparked by Bud Light’s use of a transgender influencer in its marketing campaign, which led beer drinkers to seek alternatives. Molson Coors capitalized on this opportunity and gained market share from Bud Light, further boosting its sales and performance.

Looking ahead, Chief Executive Gavin Hattersley expressed optimism for the company’s future, stating, “We plan to build on this momentum in 2024, with strong commercial plans, a powerful and supportive distributor network, and the financial flexibility to reinvest in our business.” Molson Coors expects sales to continue growing by a low single-digit percentage on a constant currency basis in 2024. Additionally, it anticipates underlying earnings per share (EPS) to grow by a mid-single-digit percentage and forecasts cash flow to total $1.2 billion, plus or minus 10%.

Investors have responded positively to Molson Coors’ recent performance, with the stock gaining 21% over the past 12 months. However, it is worth noting that the stock’s growth slightly lags behind the broader market, as the S&P 500 has gained 22.8% during the same period.

Molson Coors’ return to profitability and strong growth in sales and market share demonstrate its ability to adapt to market dynamics and capitalize on opportunities. With a solid financial foundation, strategic plans for the future, and continued support from investors, the company is well-positioned for sustained success in the beverage industry.
