In the third inning of the game against the St. Louis Cardinals, Tidwell started off by throwing a wild pitch on strike three. This was followed by a bunt single and a bloop to left field, allowing the Cardinals to advance their runners. Dylan Carlson then delivered an RBI single, adding to Tidwell’s struggles.
The chaos reached its peak when Tidwell threw a fastball that barely grazed the knob of Paul Goldschmidt’s bat. The ball rolled towards the first-base hole, but Goldschmidt remained at home plate, seemingly confused by the play. Meanwhile, Pete Alonso, the first baseman, fielded the grounder but found himself gesturing towards Tidwell, who was still near the mound instead of covering first base.
Eventually, Tidwell made his way to the base to receive the throw from Alonso and record the out. Reflecting on the play, Tidwell admitted his confusion, thinking Alonso was already at first base. It was only when Alonso yelled at him to get to first that Tidwell snapped back into action.
Despite the chaotic start, Tidwell managed to strike out the next two batters, leaving Cardinals’ runners stranded on second and third base. He was credited with three strikeouts in the inning, showcasing his potential as a pitcher.
At just 22 years old, Tidwell is highly regarded as one of the Mets’ top pitching prospects, having been a second-round pick in the 2022 draft. Last season, he advanced to Double-A Binghamton, proving his skills and potential for growth.
