Massachusetts communities prepare for rain after weekend snowstorm

Massachusetts Residents Dig Out After Snowstorm, Prepare for Intense Rain

Many residents across Massachusetts are busy clearing snow after a weekend snowstorm dumped over a foot of snow in some areas. However, they are also keeping an eye on the forecast, as intense rain is expected later this week.

Heavy Snowfall Followed by Anticipated Rain

Snowfall began on Saturday night and continued throughout Sunday. Now, rain is forecasted to arrive on Tuesday night and persist through Wednesday, creating a one-two weather punch.

Concerns arise as residents wonder where all the snow will go once the rain arrives. “This has got to go somewhere,” expressed one area resident.

Clearing Snow and Preparing for Flooding

In Methuen, a town heavily impacted by the snowstorm, Frank Lunardi was busy raking snow off his roof on Monday. Lunardi emphasized the need to clear snow off vehicles to avoid receiving tickets. Meanwhile, crews in other areas were working diligently to remove fallen trees and clear catch basins and sidewalks to prevent flooding issues in the coming days.

Residents are taking precautions as well. One individual mentioned heading to Home Depot to purchase Squeegees for their basement, anticipating potential flooding.

High Wind and Flood Watches Issued

A high wind watch and a flood watch have already been issued for parts of New England ahead of the expected rain and windstorm on Tuesday. The flood watch will cover almost all of Massachusetts, excluding Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket. The National Weather Service warns of one to three inches of rainfall, which combined with snowmelt and poor drainage, could lead to flooding.

The wind watch, set to take effect on Tuesday night for certain areas of western and eastern Massachusetts, warns of scattered tree damage and possible power outages due to wind gusts between 50 and 60 miles-per-hour.

Community Efforts to Prevent Flooding

Local officials are urging residents in snow-affected communities to locate and help clear catch basins, if possible, in preparation for the upcoming rain. This proactive measure aims to minimize the risk of flooding.
