March Madness Results: Houston Cougars and Texas Schools’ Placements on Selection Sunday

The University of Houston Cougars have had an outstanding men’s basketball season, and their hard work has paid off. With 28 wins and the Big 12 regular season championship under their belt, they earned an at-large bid and one of the four first seeds in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship tournament.

Although they were not awarded the top overall seed, which went to the UConn Huskies, Houston is still in a strong position. They are placed atop the South Region and will play their Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight rounds at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. This gives them a home advantage and a chance to secure a spot in the Final Four.

Houston is no stranger to the Final Four, having reached it six times in their program history. However, they have yet to win a national championship in basketball. This year, they are determined to change that and make history. With the strength and talent they have displayed throughout the season, it is not out of reach for the Cougars.

The Coogs’ journey to Arizona begins with a first-round game against Longwood on Friday, March 22, at the FedEx Forum in Memphis. If they advance to the second round, they will face either Nebraska or Texas A&M at the same site on Sunday, March 24. The road to the Final Four is challenging, but Houston is ready to face any opponent that comes their way.

If they make it to the Sweet Sixteen, Houston will play in the South Regional semifinal on Friday, March 29. This is a crucial game that could determine their fate in the tournament. If they emerge victorious, they will advance to the regional final, or Elite Eight, on Sunday, March 31. The State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, will be hosting the Final Four and the national title game on April 6 and 8. The Cougars have their sights set on reaching that stage and bringing home their first-ever national championship.

While the University of Houston has been the talk of the city, other Texas schools have also secured bids in the NCAA tournament. The Texas A&M Aggies earned a No. 9 seed in the South region and will face off against Nebraska in their opening game. Texas Tech Red Raiders, on the other hand, secured a No. 6 seed in the South region and will take on North Carolina State in their opening game. It is exciting to see multiple Lone Star State programs making their mark in March Madness.

As the tournament progresses, we will provide updates on the performances of these Texas schools. Make sure to watch Eyewitness News broadcasts for more details and stay tuned to this page for the latest information.
