Manny Pacquiao, boxing legend, not granted exemption for his involvement in 2024 Summer Olympics

Manny Pacquiao, the boxing legend from the Philippines, has been denied an exemption by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to participate in the upcoming 2024 Summer Olympics. The IOC’s decision comes as a disappointment to Pacquiao, who was hoping to represent his country in the prestigious event.

At the age of 45, Pacquiao needed the exemption from the IOC as the age limit for boxers is set at 40. Despite his remarkable career and achievements in the sport, the IOC sent him a letter denying his request for the exemption.

In an effort to secure Pacquiao’s participation, the Philippines themselves attempted to obtain a “universality” entry, which is given directly to countries with a limited number of athletes. However, this request was also denied by the IOC. The committee stated that universality places are not allocated to teams that have an average of more than eight athletes in individual sports or disciplines at the last two editions of the Olympic Games.

Although Pacquiao retired from professional boxing in 2021, he has continued to train and maintain his skills. Videos of him working out in a boxing gym have circulated since February 2023, showing that he still possesses his trademark quick hands. However, it is evident that Pacquiao is not as quick and agile as he was during his prime in the late 1990s when he emerged as a sensational 16-year-old boxer.

Throughout his career, Pacquiao achieved remarkable success across various weight classes. He won his first world championship, the WBC flyweight title, in December 1998. From there, he went on to win titles in seven more weight classes, including junior featherweight, featherweight, junior lightweight, lightweight, junior welterweight, welterweight, and junior middleweight.

One of Pacquiao’s most memorable bouts was against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2015. Despite losing the fight by decision, the match between the two boxing icons remains one of the most lucrative in boxing history, generating over $600 million.

Pacquiao’s last professional fight took place in August 2021 against Yordenis Ugas, which ended in a loss for the Filipino boxer. However, his impact in the Philippines extends beyond the boxing ring. He served in the House of Representatives from 2010 to 2016 and later became a senator, dedicating himself to public service.

With a professional record of 62 wins, 8 losses, and 2 draws, with 39 wins by knockout, Pacquiao has had an illustrious career. He also boasts an impressive amateur record of 60 wins and 4 losses. Despite his achievements, Pacquiao’s desire to participate in the Olympics remains unfulfilled as the IOC has chosen not to grant him an exemption.

Manny Pacquiao’s journey as a boxing legend continues, but his dream of competing in the Olympics will have to remain unrealized. Nonetheless, his impact on the sport and his country is undeniable, solidifying his status as one of boxing’s all-time greats.
