Luke Voit’s time with the New York Mets has come to an end. The veteran first baseman was released from the roster after failing to secure a spot on the Opening Day lineup. This move allows Voit to become a free agent just before the start of the season. Unfortunately for Voit, his performance during spring training was less than stellar, with a batting average of just .118. Despite hitting a home run and drawing three walks, he struggled with 14 strikeouts in the Grapefruit League.
The Mets had other plans for their designated hitter position, signing J.D. Martinez to fill that role once he is ready. In addition, Zack Short and Joey Wendle were chosen as backup infielders. D.J. Stewart is currently projected as the Opening Day DH, but his spot is not yet official as the Mets continue to search for additional batting options.
Voit’s release was not the only surprising move made by the Mets. Veteran first baseman Ji Man Choi also failed to make the cut, but unlike Voit, he will remain with the organization at Triple-A Syracuse. It seems that Voit will not have the same opportunity and will likely be looking for a new team this season.

Injuries plagued his 2021 season, including a torn meniscus, an oblique strain, and knee inflammation. Since then, his production has dropped, resulting in a combined OPS of .691 with the Padres, Nationals, and Brewers.
