Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass Discusses Preparations for 2028 Olympics and Benefits for the City

Los Angeles is gearing up to host the 2028 Olympics, following the success of the 2024 Games in Paris. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass expressed her anticipation for the event, while acknowledging the extensive preparations that need to be made. However, she remains confident that the city will rise to the occasion, just as it did in 1984 when it last hosted the Olympics.

One of the key areas of focus for the city is public transportation. Mayor Bass hopes to minimize car usage and encourage spectators to utilize public transportation to reach the venues. Achieving this goal will require significant investments in bus and subway infrastructure, as well as collaboration with neighboring cities to secure additional buses. Additionally, the city is committed to tackling the issue of street homelessness. Plans are in place to build more than 18,000 new units to provide housing for the unhoused population.

To alleviate traffic congestion during the Games, discussions will be held with local companies to explore flexible work schedules that enable employees to work remotely during peak traffic hours. Furthermore, efforts will be made to shift truck deliveries to nighttime, similar to what was done during the 1984 Games. Mayor Bass is optimistic that by organizing the region effectively, traffic can be managed more efficiently and kept to a minimum.

LA 2028 President Casey Wasserman also attended the Paris Games and was inspired by the event. He believes that Los Angeles can build upon the success of Paris and create an unforgettable experience for athletes and spectators alike. While no new permanent venues will be constructed for the Games, Wasserman acknowledges the challenge of utilizing the city’s iconic landmarks in the same way that Paris incorporated the Eiffel Tower for beach volleyball. Wasserman mentioned the possibility of altering the Hollywood Sign for the Games, a concept that would require further discussion but presents an exciting opportunity.

Actress Jessica Alba, a member of the Los Angeles 2028 board of directors, emphasized the cultural significance of the Games for the city. She sees it as a global platform to showcase the diversity and vibrancy of Los Angeles, from its entertainment industry to its fashion and culinary scenes. Alba believes that Los Angeles itself should be viewed as a main character during the Olympics.

In conclusion, Los Angeles is eagerly preparing to host the 2028 Olympics. With a focus on improving public transportation, addressing homelessness, and managing traffic effectively, the city aims to provide a successful and memorable experience for athletes, spectators, and the global audience. By leveraging its unique cultural offerings, Los Angeles hopes to shine on the world stage during the Games.
