Long Island Vegan Bakery Recalls Baked Goods Amid Allegations of Passing Off Dunkin’ Doughnut

Recall of Baked Goods from Long Island Vegan Bakery Amid State Probe

Introduction:
A Long Island vegan bakery, The Savory Fig, has voluntarily recalled some of its baked goods following allegations of trying to pass off a Dunkin’ Donut as their own. The bakery owner, Michell Siriani, denies the claims and stands by the integrity of her products.

Allegations and Response:
The controversy began when a local vegan grocer, CindySnacks, discovered a suspicious-looking doughnut similar to those from Dunkin’ Donuts mixed in with their order from The Savory Fig. They accused the bakery of passing off a Dunkin’ Donut as one of their own. In response, Siriani adamantly denied the accusation, stating that she would never pass off a Dunkin’ Donut as gluten-free or vegan.

Concerns over Ingredients and Testing:
CindySnacks expressed concern over the doughnut’s ingredients, particularly for customers with severe dairy allergies. They conducted a home-testing kit for gluten on the pastry, which revealed a “high positive” result. However, Siriani maintained that the doughnut was not from Dunkin’.

Threats and Harassment:
Following the viral allegations, Siriani claimed to have experienced threats and harassment, leading her to change her number and relocate. Despite the controversy, the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets has not imposed any fines or revoked the bakery’s license.

Collaboration with Authorities:
Siriani confirmed that The Savory Fig is now working with the Department of Agriculture to address the situation. The bakery plans to implement a new labeling system to protect clients from allergens and cross-contamination and prevent future incidents.

Voluntary Recall:
Out of an abundance of caution, The Savory Fig voluntarily recalled their manufactured baked items due to a possible undeclared wheat gluten, soy, and/or milk allergens. The recalled items include doughnuts, frosted rolls, matcha cinnamon rolls, maple pecan oat scones, and blackberry crumb muffins. No illnesses or injuries related to the possible allergen contamination have been reported.

Closure of CindySnacks:
In an unrelated move, CindySnacks has closed as a vegan market and plans to reopen as a vegan specialty deli in Centereach.

Conclusion:
The Savory Fig’s voluntary recall highlights the importance of accurate labeling and transparency in the food industry, particularly for individuals with severe allergies. While the allegations sparked controversy, it is crucial to await the results of the collaboration between the bakery and the Department of Agriculture before drawing final conclusions.
