Lionel Messi Returns with 2 Goals and an Assist in Inter Miami’s 3-1 Victory

Lionel Messi returned to the field in spectacular fashion, leading Inter Miami to a 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Union. After a lengthy absence due to national team commitments and an ankle injury, Messi showed no signs of rust or ill-effects. His two goals and assist were crucial in securing the win for his team.

Messi’s absence didn’t slow down Inter Miami, as they went 8-2 without him and secured a spot in the MLS playoffs. With a record of 19-4-5, they also took the lead in the Supporters Shield table with 62 points. However, Messi’s return undoubtedly provided a significant boost to the team.

In the 26th minute, Messi scored his first goal of the night, equalizing the match at 1-all. Luis Suárez provided the assist, sending a short pass to Messi near the large area. Messi showcased his skill by outmaneuvering Union defender Kai Wagner and converting a shot that found the back of the net.

Just four minutes later, Messi struck again. This time, he received a crossing pass inside the box and beat Philadelphia goalkeeper Andrew Rick with a powerful 15-yard shot. It was a display of Messi’s clinical finishing and ability to find the back of the net from different positions on the field.

Despite Messi’s heroics, Suárez had a goal overturned in the 44th minute due to an offside infraction. It was a disappointing turn of events for Inter Miami, but they remained determined to secure the victory.

In the 67th minute, Messi’s ankle took a hard kick from Philadelphia midfielder Quinn Sullivan as both players battled for a loose ball. Messi briefly fell to the ground and favored his ankle, but he quickly got back up and continued playing. The incident resulted in yellow cards for Sullivan and Inter Miami coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino, who argued for a harsher punishment for Sullivan.

With Philadelphia pushing for an equalizer, Messi once again showed his playmaking ability. He centered a pass to Suárez, who calmly converted from 18 yards to seal the win for Inter Miami during second half stoppage time. It was Suárez’s 17th goal of the season, highlighting his impressive scoring form.

Before his absence, Messi had already made a significant impact for Inter Miami, scoring 12 goals and providing 13 assists in just 12 league matches this season. His return brings a renewed sense of excitement and confidence to the team as they continue their league play.

Both Inter Miami and the Philadelphia Union will have road matches on Wednesday. Inter Miami will face Atlanta, while the Union will take on New York City FC. These matches will provide further opportunities for both teams to showcase their skills and continue their quest for success in the MLS.
