Lamborghini’s Sales Impacted by Tariff Uncertainty as Wealthy Buyers Hold Off

Amidst a landscape of economic uncertainty, the luxury automotive market is witnessing a notable hesitation among even its wealthiest clientele. Lamborghini’s CEO, Stephan Winkelmann, has observed that the ongoing turbulence surrounding tariff rates is making potential buyers think twice before investing in their high-ticket supercars. The recent announcement from the White House regarding a prospective 15% tariff rate on European cars offers a glimmer of hope for buyers, but this rate has yet to take effect. Currently, Lamborghini and other European manufacturers are still grappling with a hefty 27.5% tariff on vehicles exported to the U.S., a significant burden that plays into the decision-making of buyers who are often accustomed to ultra-luxury purchases starting at $400,000.

Winkelmann noted the duality of buyer sentiment: “Some are waiting because they want to be sure that this is the final number that is going to be in place,” he explained, emphasizing the cautious approach affluent consumers are taking. Even those who can afford a Lamborghini are acutely aware of pricing dynamics and market fluctuations. The reality of tariffs presents complexity in a business model that thrives on exclusivity and craftsmanship, as Winkelmann stated, “They are millionaires or billionaires for a reason, so they know what they’re doing and why they’re doing things.”

Despite the current tariff challenges, Lamborghini’s immediate demand appears relatively stable, buoyed by a substantial backlog of orders. Cars being delivered now were secured a year or two prior, indicating a built-in cushion against potential market volatility. However, the company has already signaled upcoming price increases—7% for the Temerario and Urus models and 10% for the Revuelto—further illustrating how external economic factors are influencing pricing strategies.

Lamborghini’s resilience is also bolstered by an impressive lineup of new models. In 2024, the company reported record revenues exceeding 3 billion euros (approximately $3.5 billion) while delivering nearly 11,000 cars. The introduction of three new plug-in hybrid models underscores Lamborghini’s commitment to innovation and sustainability. The 8-cylinder Temerario replaces the Huracan, while the 12-cylinder Revuelto takes over from the Aventador. Additionally, the Urus SE hybrid SUV caters to the growing market for luxury vehicles with hybrid capabilities.

Looking ahead, Lamborghini is contemplating its foray into fully electric vehicles. Initially set to unveil an all-electric grand touring car in 2028, Winkelmann hinted that the company might pivot towards a hybrid model instead, reflecting a broader trend of slowing acceptance of electric vehicles across the market. “There is a flattening in the acceptance of electric cars,” he noted, stressing the importance of timing in technology adoption. For a brand synonymous with performance and prestige, being a pioneer is less critical than ensuring they deliver the best product at the right moment.

At the recent Monterey Car Week, Lamborghini showcased the Fenomeno, a limited-production supercar that boasts an astonishing 1,080 horsepower and accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.4 seconds. With only 29 units to be produced, this model epitomizes Lamborghini’s “few-offs” strategy, catering to a select group of elite clients who seek unparalleled performance and exclusivity.

The demographic landscape of Lamborghini’s customer base is also evolving. The average age of buyers has dipped below 45 globally, and in Asia, it is under 30. This shift is indicative of a younger generation of wealth, with many customers being self-made entrepreneurs. Winkelmann remarked on the increasing participation of women in the brand’s ownership, particularly with the Urus model, which has become a gateway for more female buyers. Events tailored for women, such as “She Drives a Lambo,” are part of Lamborghini’s strategy to cultivate a more inclusive brand identity.

In conclusion, while the uncertainties surrounding tariffs and market dynamics present challenges for Lamborghini, the brand’s commitment to exclusivity, innovation, and a diverse customer base positions it well for future growth. As Winkelmann aptly stated, “We are ready to face whatever comes,” reflecting a confidence that resonates through the halls of this iconic luxury manufacturer.
