Lakewood Church, located in southwest Houston, has resumed its services a week after a tragic shooting incident that claimed one life and left two others injured. The church, led by Pastor Joel Osteen, did not discuss any increased security measures for the return.
The incident occurred on February 11 when Genesse Moreno, a 36-year-old woman, was killed by off-duty law enforcement working at the church. Her 7-year-old son was also shot, and a 47-year-old man was injured but survived. Authorities initially stated that the shooting victim was 57 years old but later corrected his age to 47.
After a week of no services, Lakewood Church resumed its regular schedule with an 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. service, along with a 2 p.m. Spanish language service. Pastor Joel Osteen began the 11 a.m. service by addressing the congregation’s concerns and offering a message of restoration and healing.
“Fear is not going to win. Faith is going to win,” Osteen declared, emphasizing the importance of unity during these challenging times. He acknowledged the severity of last week’s attack, stating that it could have been much worse. Osteen reassured the congregation that they should respond to fear with faith and shine brighter in difficult times.
The church made arrangements to accommodate families during the services, welcoming children aged three and older for special family services. This initiative aims to provide support and comfort to families affected by the shooting.
Meanwhile, law enforcement officials are still investigating the incident. The Houston Police Department has classified it as an “officer-involved shooting” and intends to release body-worn camera footage from the officer involved in taking down Moreno within the next 30 days.
As the investigation continues, Moreno’s 7-year-old son remains hospitalized at Texas Children’s Hospital in an unknown condition. The community waits anxiously for updates on his recovery.
The shooting at Lakewood Church has left a profound impact on the congregation, but it has also brought them closer together. The resilience and faith displayed by Pastor Joel Osteen and the church members serve as a testament to their unwavering spirit. While the incident is a tragic reminder of the vulnerabilities we face, it also highlights the power of unity and faith in overcoming adversity.
As Lakewood Church moves forward, it is clear that they refuse to let fear dictate their actions. They are determined to continue spreading their message of hope, restoration, and healing. Their unwavering faith will undoubtedly guide them through these difficult times, ensuring that the Lakewood community emerges stronger and more united than ever before.
