Kentucky Groundhog Passes Away on Groundhog Day After Predicting Early Spring

A Kentucky groundhog has sadly passed away on Groundhog Day, just days after predicting an early spring. Major, a nearly 10-year-old rodent meteorologist living at the Second Chances Wildlife Center, peacefully succumbed overnight to heart issues brought on by his age, according to the center’s staff.

The refuge center announced Major’s passing on Facebook, stating, “He was full of amazing energy up until the end. He will forever be in our hearts. It’s a sad day for us at the Center, especially for those who have been with us his whole life.” They also expressed gratitude for the support from their friends and assured them that Major is now at peace, enjoying treats and exploring his surroundings.

Major had been suffering from health issues for some time, and the wildlife center had anticipated his eventual passing. While groundhogs typically live to be 6 years old in the wild, they can live up to 14 years in captivity, as stated by the Wildlife Rescue League.

Major was rescued as a baby and had been living at the Second Chances Wildlife Center for the past decade. During this time, he became known for his Groundhog Day predictions. Refuge founder Brigitte Brouillard mentioned that Major’s weather predictions were about 50% accurate, according to Lex18.

This year, Major passed on the prediction task to his younger friend, Josie Burrow. On Groundhog Day, Josie forecasted an early spring, which Major had jokingly made on his own earlier in the week and then passed off to Josie. The refuge center described their interaction as great teamwork.
