All Clear on Katy Freeway After 18-Wheeler Loses Container

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – Houston police have reported that the Katy Freeway is now clear after an 18-wheeler lost its container near downtown, causing a significant closure.

Early Morning Incident Causes Major Backups

The incident occurred at approximately 6:20 a.m. and resulted in major backups on the Katy Freeway. SkyEye footage showed the large container sitting in the middle inbound lane near Taylor Street, causing traffic to back up all the way to the 610 West Loop.

Furthermore, three right lanes were blocked by police patrol vehicles, leaving many drivers stranded and waiting.

Bridge Inspection Reveals Cosmetic Damage

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the 18-wheeler struck the bottom of the Houston Avenue bridge while hauling the container. TxDOT employees were dispatched to inspect the bridge, which was found to have only cosmetic damage. As a result, all lanes were reopened as it was deemed safe.

Driver’s Condition and Responsibility

The driver of the 18-wheeler appeared to be unharmed. It is still uncertain whether the driver will face any citations for the incident.

Repeat Incidents Call for Bridge Renovations

This is not the first time such an incident has occurred at the Houston Avenue bridge. Officials report that in the past three years, there have been four similar situations where an 18-wheeler collided with the overpass. The most recent incident took place in November. TxDOT has acknowledged the recurring issue and plans to undertake a renovation project for the bridge.
