Karen Read Team Remains Confident After Second Day of Testimony, Unconcerned About Witnesses

The Karen Read murder trial continues to captivate audiences as the prosecution presented their witnesses during the first two days of proceedings. Karen Read, a 44-year-old woman from Mansfield, is facing several charges, including second-degree murder, in connection with the death of her boyfriend, John O’Keefe. The trial is being closely watched by the public and media alike.

On Monday and Tuesday, the court heard from the first set of witnesses, which included two Canton Police officers and a Canton firefighter and paramedic who were present at the scene when O’Keefe’s body was discovered in the snow outside a Canton home in January 2022. These individuals provided their accounts of the events that unfolded on that fateful night.

According to prosecutors, Read allegedly killed O’Keefe by hitting him with her car during an argument and then leaving him to die in a snowbank. However, Read’s defense team has adamantly maintained her innocence, claiming that she is being framed. They argue that O’Keefe was actually beaten inside the home of another Boston police officer before being left outside. The defense further alleges that a law enforcement cover-up involving multiple individuals and agencies took place.

One of the key witnesses to take the stand on Tuesday was Canton Firefighter and Paramedic Timothy Nuttall, who responded to the crime scene. Nuttall testified that he asked Read and two other women present at the scene what had happened, and a woman with blood on her face, whom he believed to be Read, repeatedly said, “I hit him.” This testimony seemed to support the prosecution’s narrative.

However, after court proceedings, Read denied uttering those exact words. When asked about Nuttall’s testimony, one of Read’s lawyers pointed out that Nuttall’s story had changed since his initial statement to a state police investigator. Initially, Nuttall claimed that he overheard Read say, “I hit him” to one of her friends, not directly to him.

Defense Attorney Alan Jackson expressed confidence in discrediting Nuttall’s testimony, stating, “That’s pretty obvious.” He further mentioned that none of the Commonwealth’s witnesses were concerning to the defense team. This statement indicates that Read’s legal counsel remains confident in their position and is ready to challenge the prosecution’s case.

As court proceedings take a break on Wednesday, all eyes will be back on the trial when it resumes on Thursday. For those following the case closely, live streaming of the proceedings is available on whdh.com, the 7News app, and the 7News Facebook page.
