Jury Selection Begins for High Profile Murder Case: Investigation into the Death of John O’Keefe Raises Questions about Karen Read’s Involvement

Dedham Superior Court is abuzz with anticipation as the highly-anticipated Karen Read murder trial gets underway. Supporters who have been faithfully attending court hearings for nearly two years will have to maintain a distance of 200 feet from the courthouse as jury selection commences, as ordered by the court. In addition, the use of audio enhancing devices, such as megaphones, during protests will be prohibited.

Karen Read has vehemently denied the prosecutors’ claims that she backed into her Boston Police officer boyfriend, John O’Keefe, outside a Canton home owned by another Boston Police officer during a snowstorm in 2022 and left him to die. Pleading not guilty to second-degree murder, Read has been vocal about her efforts to save O’Keefe’s life, stating, “I was covered in his blood, I was the only one trying to save his life.”

The trial begins with a crucial motion to determine whether Read’s defense team can present evidence pointing to another individual who may have committed the crime. The defense hopes to call a forensic expert who testifies that O’Keefe’s injuries were consistent with a beating and dog bites rather than being struck by a car. “By asking this court to prohibit the defense from introducing evidence that others had the motive, opportunity, and means to attack John O’Keefe, the Commonwealth is essentially asking this court to prohibit Karen Read from being able to defend herself,” argued Read’s attorney, David Yanetti.

Another significant motion centers around whether jurors should be allowed to see comments made by Read while in custody, captured on a police body camera. In the video, Read briefly suggests that other people at the party may have caused O’Keefe’s injuries and death. “We’re all in on the same joke, right? My tail light is cracked and John was pulverized,” she says. The judge will determine whether these comments are admissible as evidence.

The trial is expected to last between six and seven weeks once a jury is selected and opening statements are presented. As the community eagerly awaits the outcome of this high-profile murder case, the proceedings promise to shed light on the mysterious circumstances surrounding John O’Keefe’s death and Karen Read’s alleged involvement.
