Helen Hunt’s Absence in New “Twisters” Movie Leaves Fans Wanting More
Fans of the original disaster film “Twister” were left disappointed after the release of the trailer for its upcoming sequel, “Twisters,” during the 2024 Super Bowl. The absence of the original star, Helen Hunt, has sparked a wave of speculation and disappointment among moviegoers, who had hoped for a cameo appearance from the beloved actress.
Social media platforms were flooded with fans expressing their desire to see Hunt in the new film. Many took to Twitter, reminiscing about her role in the original movie and expressing their hopes for her return. However, a Universal source confirmed that the 60-year-old actress will not be making an appearance in “Twisters.”
Despite the absence of Hunt, the new film boasts an impressive cast. Glen Powell takes on the lead role as Tyler Owens, alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kate Cooper and Anthony Ramos as Javi. The supporting cast includes Maura Tierney, Kiernan Shipka, and David Corenswet. The film’s lead actor, Powell, has clarified that “Twisters” is neither a reboot nor a sequel but rather a completely original story set in the modern day.
In 2022, Deadline reported that the working story for “Twisters” involved the daughter of Jo and Bill, the characters portrayed by Hunt and the late Bill Paxton in the original film. While there is no confirmation on whether this storyline will be pursued, it remains a possibility.
The absence of Hunt in the new film is especially poignant considering the loss of some original cast members. Bill Paxton, who starred alongside Hunt in “Twister” and appeared in other notable films such as “Aliens,” “Titanic,” and “Apollo 13,” passed away in 2017 at the age of 61. Another star from the original film, Philip Seymour Hoffman, tragically died in 2014 at the age of 46.
Fans have been vocal about their disappointment with the exclusion of Hunt from the sequel, especially since the actress revealed that she had pitched a sequel concept in 2020. In an interview on “Watch What Happens Live” in 2021, Hunt expressed her frustration at the rejection of her idea, which aimed to bring more diversity to the storm-chasing narrative. Despite the industry’s focus on diversity at the time, Hunt’s concept was not given the green light.
Hunt’s collaborator, Daveed Diggs, also spoke out about the circumstances surrounding the rejection of their concept. In an interview with Insider in 2023, Diggs hinted at shady reasons behind the decision, suggesting that the industry’s practices played a role.
While fans may be disappointed by Hunt’s absence in “Twisters,” the film promises to deliver a fresh and original story with a talented cast. As moviegoers eagerly await its release on July 19, it remains to be seen whether the new film can live up to the legacy of its predecessor without the presence of its original star.
