Inmate Escapes Custody in League City: Investigation Underway

The League City Police Department is currently investigating the escape of an inmate, Desmond Taylor, from their custody at UTMB Victory Lakes. Taylor, 37, had been booked into the League City Jail on Friday on a charge of family assault with previous convictions. On Sunday morning, around 1 a.m., Taylor managed to escape from the hospital where he was being evaluated for a medical complaint.

According to preliminary investigations, Taylor escaped while the officer who was supervising him used the bathroom. It is still unclear whether Taylor was handcuffed at the time, and the department is currently reviewing their policies on restraints for hospitalized inmates. Although it is common practice to handcuff inmates, there are medical exemptions to this rule.

During the investigation, the police found Taylor’s gown outside the hospital, leading them to believe that he escaped wearing only underwear and socks. However, he was later apprehended wearing gloves and blue coveralls, which are believed to have been taken from the Jardina Center, a nearby heavy equipment and landscaping materials center.

Darrell Dominy, a truck driver at the Jardina Center, discovered that two of the trucks he drives had been tampered with when he arrived at work on Sunday morning. He found a sock on one of the trucks and noticed that the storage compartment had been opened, with his blue coveralls and gloves missing. Dominy identified these garments as the same ones he was photographed wearing at the time of Taylor’s arrest.

The Jardina Center was closed on Sunday, which means that Taylor and Dominy were likely the only two people present at the time. Interestingly, Taylor claims that he did not notice Dominy, who was apprehended while running across the feeder road where the business is located.

After being apprehended, Taylor was taken to the Galveston County Jail, where he is now facing an additional escape charge. The League City Police Department continues to investigate the incident in order to prevent such occurrences in the future and ensure the safety of both inmates and the public.
