Illegal Sale of Spider Monkey and Toucans on Craigslist Leads to Sentencing of Houston Woman

Houston Woman Sentenced for Illegal Sale of Exotic Animals

In a shocking case of wildlife trafficking, a Houston woman has been sentenced to 15 months in federal prison for illegally selling wild animals, including a spider monkey and exotic birds. Savannah Nicole Valdez, 21, pleaded guilty to the charges and will also face three years of supervised release, according to U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani.

This is not the first time Valdez has been involved in such activities. She was previously sentenced to two years of supervised release after smuggling a monkey into the United States and onto a high-speed flight from an immigration checkpoint. However, this sentence has been revoked and replaced with another month in prison.

The illegal sale of the animals came to light in the summer of 2023 when authorities discovered multiple Craigslist posts advertising keel-billed toucans and yellow-headed Amazon parrots for sale. These exotic birds are protected under the Endangered Species Act, making their sale illegal without proper permits.

During their investigation, undercover authorities set up a sale for two keel-billed toucans and a Mexican spider monkey. It was discovered that the contact number listed for the animals was the same as Valdez’s personal cell phone number, implicating her in the illegal trade.

Valdez’s mother sold the toucans at Memorial City Mall in Houston for $3,000 on July 28, 2023. Later, she admitted that it was her daughter who had arranged the sale. A few days later, on August 1, Valdez coordinated the sale of a Mexican spider monkey for $8,500, which was delivered by her sister on her behalf.

Fortunately, the animals involved in this case have been transferred to zoos within Texas. However, the incident shines a light on the dark world of wildlife trafficking and its devastating impact on endangered species.

“When Savannah Valdez sold a Mexican spider monkey, she contributed to endangering a species,” said Hamdani. “Those who traffic in infant spider monkeys shoot the mothers first and then pull the infants from their mother’s dead bodies before throwing them into cages for transport. Valdez’s actions helped sustain an illicit market that encouraged the needless death and suffering of endangered animals.”

It is crucial to address the issue of wildlife trafficking as it not only threatens the existence of endangered species but also perpetuates animal cruelty. The illegal trade in exotic animals often involves capturing them from their natural habitats, subjecting them to stressful and inhumane conditions during transport, and ultimately compromising their overall well-being.

The sentencing of Valdez sends a strong message that such activities will not be tolerated. However, more needs to be done to combat wildlife trafficking globally. Governments, law enforcement agencies, and conservation organizations must work together to strengthen regulations, increase enforcement efforts, and raise public awareness about the consequences of participating in this illegal trade.

As responsible citizens, it is essential for us to support initiatives that promote wildlife conservation and combat wildlife trafficking. By refraining from purchasing exotic animals and reporting any suspicious activities related to the illegal trade, we can contribute to the protection of our planet’s valuable biodiversity.

Savannah Valdez will remain on bond until she voluntarily surrenders to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility in the near future, as per officials’ instructions. The case serves as a reminder that the illegal sale of animals not only leads to legal consequences but also perpetuates the suffering of endangered species. Let us all take a stand against wildlife trafficking and protect the magnificent creatures that share our planet.
