How the Giants Plan to Address the Daniel Jones Question in the NFL Draft

The New York Giants have a major question to address in the upcoming NFL Draft: do they draft a quarterback to eventually replace Daniel Jones or not? This decision will have a significant impact on the team’s future and the success of General Manager Joe Schoen and Coach Brian Daboll.

While the Giants have other needs to address, such as finding a true No. 1 wide receiver, a starting cornerback, and fixing their offensive line, the quarterback position is at the forefront of their minds. With only six picks in this year’s draft, the Giants must make the most of their selections and prioritize their needs.

Schoen acknowledges the uniqueness of the quarterback position, stating that there are only a few individuals on the planet who can play it at a high level. The Giants have shown genuine interest in several quarterbacks, including J.J. McCarthy from Michigan and Drake Maye from North Carolina. Maye, in particular, has physical abilities that resemble Josh Allen, an enticing prospect for Schoen and Daboll who previously worked with Allen in Buffalo.

However, it may be challenging for the Giants to acquire Maye with the No. 6 overall pick, as the Patriots at No. 3 are also in need of a quarterback. If the Giants want a shot at Maye, they may need to make a trade to move up in the draft. This decision would require them to part with significant draft equity in 2024 and 2025 and admit that re-signing Jones was a mistake.

Alternatively, the Giants could stay where they are and select a stud wide receiver to enhance Jones’ ability to succeed. Marvin Harrison Jr. may be off the board, but Malik Nabers and Rome Odunze could still be available. Adding a talented receiver would undoubtedly improve the team’s scoring ability and provide a boost to their offense.

Ultimately, the Giants face a difficult decision in the draft. They must weigh the potential of acquiring a future franchise quarterback against the needs of their current roster. While adding a quarterback is crucial, it must be the right one. The Giants’ decision on Thursday night will have a lasting impact on the entire organization.
