Houston Rockets Secure No. 3 Pick in 2024 NBA Draft, Potential Targets Revealed

The Houston Rockets have secured a top-four selection in the NBA Draft for the fourth consecutive year, thanks to the James Harden trade. This trade led to seasons of struggle for the Rockets but also brought about steady improvement. Ime Udoka, the head coach of the Rockets, represented the team at the 2024 NBA Draft Lottery in Chicago. The Atlanta Hawks, despite having the second-lowest odds, won the coveted No. 1 pick.

Before the lottery process, the Rockets had the potential to earn two top-four picks. They possessed the Brooklyn Nets’ unprotected first-round pick, acquired in a trade in 2021 that involved their former cornerstone player. The Nets, who did not make the playoffs, had the sixth-lowest odds of securing a top-four spot. The Rockets also had their own pick, which would have gone to the Oklahoma City Thunder if it did not fall within the first through fourth picks.

In the end, Houston landed at No. 12, fulfilling their end of the trade with OKC. However, the Nets jumped from their projected No. 9 spot to secure the No. 3 pick. This pick now becomes an asset that Udoka, Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta, and general manager Rafael Stone can use in a potential trade.

The No. 3 pick adds to a string of high draft picks for the Rockets since parting ways with Harden. In 2021, they had the No. 2 pick and three first-round selections overall. In 2022, they acquired the No. 3 pick and two first-round picks. And last year, they cracked the top four and had another first-rounder.

This year, Houston only has the No. 3 pick in the first round. Unlike previous drafts, there isn’t a clear-cut top prospect dominating discussions. However, according to ESPN’s Jonathan Givony, a French teenager named Zaccharie Risacher is projected to go first overall, followed by another French player, Alex Sarr, at No. 2. Givony believes that Reed Sheppard, a guard from the University of Kentucky, could be Houston’s pick at No. 3. Sheppard’s dynamic shooting ability, versatility, and defensive instincts make him an attractive option for the Rockets.

Another potential option for Houston is UConn center Donovan Clingan, who could serve as a backup to Alperen Sengun. Ultimately, the Rockets’ decision will depend on their priorities, such as shooting and roster construction.

Looking back at their recent first-round selections, the Rockets have made some promising choices. In 2021, they drafted Jalen Green at No. 2, Usman Garuba at No. 23, and Josh Christopher at No. 24. They also acquired Alperen Sengun, who was originally drafted by Oklahoma City with the No. 16 pick. In 2022, they picked Jabari Smith Jr. at No. 3 and Tari Eason at No. 17 while acquiring TyTy Washington, initially drafted by Memphis at No. 29. In 2023, they selected Amen Thompson at No. 4 and Cam Whitmore at No. 20.

As for the upcoming draft, it remains to be seen who will join the Rockets in Clutch City. There is also the possibility of the Rockets trading out of their pick on draft night. Fans can find out the outcome when the 2024 NBA Draft airs live on June 26-27.

Overall, despite their recent struggles, the Rockets have managed to secure high draft picks and have the opportunity to add promising talent to their roster. The future looks bright for Houston as they continue to rebuild and improve their team through the draft.
