House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer: Biden Family “Got Played” by Hunter Biden’s Surprise Appearance

In a hearing on whether to hold Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) argued that it was the Biden family that “got played” by the first son’s unexpected appearance. Comer made these remarks during an interview with NewsNation, stating that the American people witnessed the arrogance and entitlement of President Biden’s son during his 17-minute-long appearance at the oversight panel’s hearing.

Contempt Resolution Referral

The committee voted along party lines to refer a contempt resolution against Hunter Biden to the full House. This resolution is a result of Biden’s refusal to comply with subpoenas for his testimony issued by the House Oversight and Judiciary committees last year as part of the impeachment inquiry into President Biden.

Biden has insisted on testifying in public, while Republicans leading the inquiry argue that he must first sit for a closed-door deposition. Comer stated that Biden is welcome to show up for a committee hearing after a deposition, as is customary in investigations conducted by both Congress and law enforcement agencies.

Hunter Biden’s Reluctance to Answer Questions

Comer pointed out that despite Biden’s claim of being ready to answer questions publicly, he largely avoided doing so during the hearing. Comer cited an instance where Rep. Jared Moskowitz stated that Hunter Biden was present to answer questions, but two minutes later, when Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene was about to ask him questions, Biden left the room. Comer argued that, in his opinion, it was the Biden family that got played during the hearing.

Republicans Investigating President Biden’s Involvement

Comer dismissed criticism that the chaotic moment would backfire on Republicans investigating President Biden’s involvement in his family’s overseas business dealings. He emphasized that their focus is on determining whether Joe Biden is compromised due to the millions of dollars his family received from foreign entities. Comer stated that if Hunter Biden can answer that question, their interest in him will be satisfied.
