Heater Problems at Two Houston ISD Schools Amid Freezing Temperatures

Introduction

As freezing temperatures continue to affect the Houston area, two schools in the Houston Independent School District (HISD) are facing heater problems on Wednesday morning, according to the district.

Heater Issues After School Closures

Harvard Elementary School and Pershing Middle School are experiencing heater malfunctions as students return to class following the closure of HISD and other Houston-area districts due to the Arctic blast and icy road conditions.

HISD stated on Wednesday that technicians are working to address the heater problems at the affected schools. In the meantime, portable heaters are being sent to ensure students’ comfort while crews work on fixing the issues.

Regret Over School Closures

HISD Superintendent Mike Miles expressed regret during a Tuesday night meeting for closing schools on Tuesday and vowed not to repeat the same mistake. He compared teachers to first responders and emphasized their role as essential workers.

A teacher present at the meeting, Daniel Santos, confirmed Miles’ comments but disagreed with them, emphasizing that the safety of students and staff should always be the top priority.

Duration of Repairs

HISD did not provide an estimate for how long the heater repairs would take on Wednesday.

Overall, as freezing temperatures persist, HISD is working diligently to resolve the heater problems at Harvard Elementary School and Pershing Middle School, ensuring a comfortable learning environment for students.
