Hector Neris Declines Option with Houston Astros, Becomes Free Agent

Reliever Hector Neris has declined his part of an $8.5 million mutual option for 2024 with the Houston Astros, making him a free agent as of Sunday.

Neris will receive a $1 million buyout, which completes his $17 million, two-year contract.
The 34-year-old right-hander had an impressive season, going 6-3 with a 1.71 ERA and two saves in 71 games. This marked his third consecutive season with 70 or more appearances. However, he struggled in the postseason, giving up home runs to Jorge Polanco and Royce Lewis of the Minnesota Twins in the AL Division Series opener, as well as a home run to Josh Jung of the Texas Rangers in Game 3 of the AL Championship Series. In total, he had a 6.48 ERA in seven postseason appearances.
Neris, originally from the Dominican Republic, has a career record of 33-36 with a 3.24 ERA and 89 saves over his ten seasons in the MLB. He played for the Philadelphia Phillies from 2014 to 2021 before joining the Houston Astros in 2022.
