Health care worker in Tennessee diagnosed with brain cancer demonstrates remarkable memory during surgery by reciting all 50 states

In a remarkable display of memory and resilience, 24-year-old Jayden Zientara, a healthcare partner at Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee, recently underwent brain surgery and astounded medical staff by reciting all 50 states in alphabetical order. Zientara’s journey began with a severe migraine in late November 2023, a symptom she had never experienced before. After seeking medical help, she was eventually diagnosed with a brain tumor roughly the size of a baseball.

Zientara’s specific brain tumor, known as an astrocytoma, is rare and typically found in men over 40 and children under two. The removal of the tumor required a 12-hour surgery, during which Zientara needed to be awake for part of it to stimulate her brain. Prior to the procedure, doctors asked her what they could engage her on to keep her brain active, and Zientara mentioned her love for the Boston Celtics and her ability to recite all 50 states in alphabetical order.

During the surgery, Zientara sang a song that she had learned in elementary school, which happened to be a mnemonic device for remembering the states. Although she does not recall being awake during the procedure, she was amazed when she saw the video of herself singing and naming all 50 states. Zientara’s mother, Jamie Zientara, expressed her shock and gratitude for the support her daughter has received.

Since the surgery, Zientara has returned home to Illinois to be with her family before starting chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Each treatment will last for six weeks, but Zientara remains positive and even joked about being a “pro” after her first brain surgery. She credits her mother for being a strong support system during this challenging time.

To help with the overwhelming medical costs associated with her treatment, Zientara has set up a GoFundMe page. The response and outpouring of support she has received so far have been truly remarkable.

Jayden Zientara’s journey is an inspiring example of strength and resilience in the face of adversity. Her ability to recall all 50 states during brain surgery showcases her extraordinary memory and determination. As she continues her battle against brain cancer, Zientara’s story serves as a reminder of the incredible power of the human spirit and the importance of support during difficult times.
