2024 Golden Globes: A Disappointing Broadcast

The 2024 Golden Globes underwent several reforms, including changes to its voting body, a new owner, and a switch to a different network. However, these efforts were overshadowed by the disappointing broadcast on Sunday night.

A Lackluster Evening

The three-hour show was agonizingly unfunny, with only a handful of great speeches. The usual entertainment of celebrities getting drunk for amusement was absent, as A-listers sat slumped in their seats, looking bored.

The Need for a Delightful Host

One major change the Golden Globes should have made was to eliminate the host unless they could find someone as delightful and hilarious as Kristen Wiig and Will Ferrell. Unfortunately, comedian Jo Koy’s opening monologue was unbearable and fell flat.

Koy’s attempts at humor, such as his #Barbenheimer bit, were met with groans from the audience. The situation became so awkward that he even snapped at the crowd, telling them to “shut up.” His jokes about Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce also fell flat, leaving Swift visibly unamused.

The Winners and Losers

The winners of the night were mostly as expected, with a few surprises. “Oppenheimer” emerged as a strong contender for the Oscars, winning five Golden Globes, including Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Actor – Drama for Cillian Murphy. On the other hand, “Barbie” suffered losses across the board.

Emma Stone’s performance in “Poor Things” beat out Margot Robbie’s Mattel movie, earning her the award for Best Actress – Comedy or Musical. Bradley Cooper also lost to Murphy for Best Actor – Drama, increasing the likelihood of him losing the Oscar once again.

In the television categories, HBO’s “Succession” took home several awards, including Best Series – Drama and Best Actor. There were also some surprises, such as Kieran Culkin winning instead of co-star Jeremy Strong.

A Disappointing Evening

Overall, the 2024 Golden Globes broadcast was a letdown. With upcoming award shows like the Emmys and the Critics’ Choice Awards, it may be time for the Golden Globes to consider calling it quits for the sake of everyone’s sanity.
