Former HISD Middle School Teacher Arrested for Allegedly Engaging in Sexual Acts with Student

A former HISD middle school teacher, Dale Vanwright, has been arrested on charges of engaging in sexual acts with a 14-year-old student. The incidents allegedly took place while Vanwright was working as a design teacher at Tanglewood Middle School in Houston, Texas.

According to court documents, the victim was dating one of Vanwright’s relatives who also attended Tanglewood Middle School. The relationship between the victim and the relative is not disclosed to protect the victim’s identity. Police say that the victim started doing video calls with Vanwright after school, which eventually led to explicit requests.

In a recorded call from February 2024, believed to be made from Vanwright’s northeast Houston home, he allegedly asked the victim to expose herself. Prosecutors claim that Vanwright offered his assistance if his relative couldn’t satisfy her sexually. He then coerced the victim into performing a sex act on camera, warning her that he would hang up if his wife entered the room.

The situation escalated in May when Vanwright allegedly fondled the victim in his car outside a west Houston store, urging her to allow him to touch her. However, the victim managed to persuade him to stop by reminding him that they still needed to pick up his relative from practice.

It remains unclear how these allegations came to light. The victim was interviewed earlier this month, and charges were finally brought against Vanwright on Thursday. Court documents reveal that Vanwright had already lost his job at Tanglewood in March after being accused of kissing and hugging another 14-year-old student.

This disturbing case raises concerns about the safety and well-being of students within the education system. It underscores the importance of rigorous background checks and continuous monitoring of teachers to prevent such incidents from happening. Schools must prioritize the protection of students by implementing strict policies and procedures that address inappropriate behavior and ensure immediate action is taken when allegations arise.

The Houston Independent School District (HISD) has yet to comment on the matter. It is essential for educational institutions to promptly address and respond to such incidents, not only to protect their students but also to maintain the trust and confidence of parents and the community.

Cases like these remind us of the significant responsibility placed on educators and the need for a safe and supportive environment for students to thrive. Schools must prioritize comprehensive sex education programs that teach students about consent, healthy relationships, and boundaries. Such programs can empower students to recognize inappropriate behavior and report it.

In conclusion, the arrest of Dale Vanwright serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers students may face within educational settings. It is crucial for schools to prioritize student safety through comprehensive policies that prevent and address incidents of misconduct. By doing so, we can create an environment where students can learn and grow without fear or harm.
