Former High School Wrestler Stops Man Accused of Disturbing Subway Restaurant
In a dramatic turn of events, a former high school wrestler showcased his quick thinking and athleticism as he successfully apprehended a man accused of causing a disturbance at a Subway restaurant in Indianapolis. Gabriel Pitzulo, the hero of the hour, leaped into action during his lunch break when he witnessed the man verbally and physically abusing a Subway employee.
The incident, which took place on March 22, unfolded at the E. Hanna Ave location. Pitzulo recounted the events to ABC affiliate WRTV, stating that he saw the man throwing objects at the employee behind the counter and even spitting on her. Incensed by this appalling behavior, Pitzulo’s instincts kicked in, propelled by the values instilled in him from a young age. “How I was raised, you don’t do that stuff. It was kind of go time from there,” he shared with WRTV.
Unwilling to let the perpetrator escape, Pitzulo, a former high school wrestler and football player, employed his sports experience to tackle the suspect. Drawing on his combat sports background, he skillfully restrained the man without causing excessive harm. “I did combat sports for quite a while, so I was completely controlling. I didn’t want to hurt him too bad,” Pitzulo explained.
With Pitzulo expertly pinning him down, the suspect, later identified as Daniel Saunders, attempted to flee the scene but was swiftly apprehended by the former wrestler. The entire incident was captured by surveillance cameras, providing indisputable evidence of the heroic act.
Law enforcement officers promptly arrived at the scene and arrested Saunders. Police records indicate that he faces charges of battery injury, battery resulting in bodily injury, and disorderly conduct-fighting/tumultuous conduct. However, no information regarding Saunders’ legal representation was immediately available. His next court date is scheduled for Thursday, according to police records.
Aara Khan, the district manager for the Subway location, expressed gratitude for Pitzulo’s quick response. “It could’ve turned out very dangerous,” Khan acknowledged. “Luckily he was here at the right time and the right place.” Pitzulo’s intervention prevented further harm to the Subway employee and potentially diffused a volatile situation.
