Ford Motor’s U.S. new vehicle sales experienced a significant boost last month, with an 11.2% increase compared to May of the previous year. This growth can be attributed to strong sales of all-electric and hybrid models. Surprisingly, sales of hybrid and electric vehicles saw a staggering 65% rise, while sales of traditional internal combustion engine vehicles only increased by 5.6%.

However, it is important to note that despite the impressive growth in the hybrid and EV segments, these vehicles accounted for only 14% of Ford’s total sales last month, with approximately 26,600 units sold. This raises concerns among investors as Ford aims to expand its EV sales to comply with tightening fuel economy standards and emissions regulations. The company’s electric vehicle unit, Model E, has reported significant losses, with a loss of $1.32 billion on 10,000 vehicles sold from January through March.

Nonetheless, there were some notable successes in the EV space for Ford. Sales of the all-electric F-150 Lightning pickups nearly doubled in May compared to the same period in 2023. Similarly, sales of the Mustang Mach-E EV saw a significant increase of 46% year over year. These positive outcomes demonstrate the potential for growth in the EV market.

In addition to EVs, Ford is also focusing on hybrid technology as part of its strategy to meet future demands. The automaker has announced plans to delay the production of new all-electric vehicles and instead prioritize offering hybrid options across its entire North American lineup by 2030. This decision is in line with Ford’s commitment to sustainability and its efforts to cater to a wider range of customers.

Looking at Ford’s overall performance, the company reported total year-to-date U.S. sales through May of 877,685 units, representing a 5.6% increase compared to the same period in 2023. SUV sales have been the driving force behind this growth, with a roughly 10% increase, followed by a 2.5% uptick in truck and van sales.
