Florida Doctor Avoids Jail After Luxury Yacht Raid with Drugs, Guns, and “Prostitutes”

Florida doctor Scott Anthony Burke, who is terminally ill, managed to avoid jail time after being arrested on his luxury yacht in Nantucket Harbor. Burke pleaded guilty to four charges, including possessing cocaine and a Class A drug with intent to distribute, possessing a firearm and ammunition without the required license. The arrest was made after police received a call about a 33-year-old woman overdosing on drugs and expressing her desire to leave the yacht.

During the subsequent raid on Burke’s 82-foot yacht, named the Jess Conn, officers discovered significant quantities of drugs, including cocaine and ketamine. They also found firearms and ammunition on board. Additionally, the presence of prostitutes was reported, although Burke did not face any charges related to prostitution. The woman who was found overdosing on the yacht informed her friend during a phone conversation that some of the guests had been making pornographic films during the drug-fueled weekend.

According to police affidavits, Burke claimed to be unaware of any illegal drugs onboard and described the woman as an employee who had been hired a few weeks earlier. However, police stated that Burke was uncooperative during the arrest. It was later revealed that Burke had stage 4 terminal cancer and was not expected to live much longer.

Due to Burke’s health condition and his age, the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s office agreed to a plea deal. A spokesperson for the office explained that they took into consideration his lack of criminal record and his deteriorating health when agreeing to probation instead of jail time. The spokesperson also mentioned that Burke faced additional charges related to possessing firearms and a Class A drug, but those charges were ultimately dismissed.

Burke is a retired physician who previously practiced in Colorado and founded Denver Spine and Rehab. He later moved to Florida and resided in the exclusive Ocean Reef Club. The residents of this club are known for their wealth.

In conclusion, despite the serious nature of the charges against him, Scott Anthony Burke managed to avoid jail time due to his terminal illness and other factors. The case highlights the complexities involved in sentencing individuals with serious health conditions, and raises questions about how the justice system should approach such cases.
