FEMA Offers Disaster Assistance to Texans Affected by Recent Storms and Flooding

Texans recovering from the recent devastating storm and flooding can now turn to FEMA for disaster assistance. The agency is offering aid to residents in several counties, including Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, Polk, San Jacinto, Trinity, and Walker. If you have suffered damage from the storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes, or flooding that began on April 26th, you may be eligible for help through FEMA’s Serious Need Assistance (SNA) program.

Under the SNA program, qualified individuals can receive a one-time payment of $750 per household. This assistance is in addition to any other aid you may qualify for. To be eligible for SNA, you must indicate on your FEMA application that you are displaced, in need of shelter, or facing emergency costs due to the disaster.

In order to receive additional help, you must complete a FEMA application and confirm your identity. Your primary residence should be in a declared disaster area, and FEMA must confirm the extent of the damage either through an inspection or the documents you provide. It’s important to note that you must apply for FEMA assistance while the Serious Needs Assistance and Displacement Assistance programs are still available.

To apply for FEMA assistance, residents can visit DisasterAssistance.gov, use the FEMA app, or call the FEMA helpline at 1-800-621-3362. However, it’s crucial to be aware of scammers who often take advantage of disasters. These fraudsters may pose as official disaster aid workers or federal agents and offer assistance in completing your FEMA application. In reality, they are attempting to steal your personal information.

FEMA warns everyone impacted by the severe weather to exercise caution and ensure that the inspector who visits your home or business is a genuine representative from the agency. Harris County Judge Line Hidalgo echoed this sentiment during a recent press conference, emphasizing that legitimate FEMA representatives will wear agency-branded shirts and possess official badges. It’s worth noting that they may not arrive in marked vehicles, as they often use rental cars.

If you have any doubts about an inspector’s identity, FEMA advises calling the agency to confirm. Additionally, it’s essential to remember that legitimate FEMA inspectors will never come to your home without receiving an application, nor will they ask for money.
