“FDNY Teams Up to Offer Free Skin Cancer Screenings for Firefighters”

New York’s Bravest, the firefighters of the FDNY, are facing a personal battle against skin cancer. To address this issue, the FDNY has partnered with the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) and the Firefighter Cancer Support Network to offer free skin cancer screenings for firefighters at the fire academy on Randalls Island.

The sobering data provided by the AAD reveals that firefighters have a 21% higher risk of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, compared to the general public. This increased risk is due to the absorption or inhalation of cancer-causing substances during firefighting operations.

Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh expressed the personal significance of this fight against cancer for the FDNY. She emphasized the importance of screening and prevention in making a difference in the health and safety of their members. The FDNY is grateful to participate in the Firefighter Skin Cancer Checks Initiative and encourages its members to get their skin checked annually.

Since launching its first screening event in September 2023, the FDNY, along with its partners, has already provided free screenings to over 300 firefighters. These screenings have identified 78 potential or suspected cases of cancer, highlighting the critical need for ongoing vigilance and care.

The upcoming event on Randalls Island marks the launch of the AAD’s Firefighter Skin Cancer Checks Program. This nationwide campaign aims to provide free skin cancer screenings to 10,000 firefighters by 2026. At this event, FDNY firefighters and top dermatologists from the AAD will be present to offer insights into spotting the early signs of skin cancer and discuss the unique risks that New York’s heroes face.

This collaboration between the FDNY, AAD, and Firefighter Cancer Support Network is an important step in addressing the elevated risk of skin cancer among firefighters. By providing free screenings and raising awareness about the dangers of exposure to cancer-causing substances, they are working towards protecting the health and well-being of these dedicated individuals. It is crucial to continue supporting initiatives like this to ensure the safety of those who risk their lives to protect others.
