Exploring the Reality at the Texas-Mexico Border: ABC13 Investigates

The Texas-Mexico border has long been a hotbed of activity when it comes to illegal immigration and trafficking. ABC13 recently conducted an investigation in collaboration with a bipartisan Texas congressional delegation to gain a deeper understanding of the situation. What they discovered was both eye-opening and concerning.

During their exploration, the signs of trafficking were apparent everywhere, particularly in and around Hidalgo County. Border patrol union vice president, Chris Cabrera, accompanied the delegation and provided valuable insights into the daily occurrences at the border. Cabrera pointed to the damaged fence as evidence of the constant flow of migrants. He emphasized that once these individuals manage to cross the border and get into a vehicle, they can easily disappear.

ABC13’s cameras were present at the border on a Friday night when a group of 22 illegal migrants approached border agents and turned themselves in. The group consisted mostly of families, with only one individual traveling alone. Originating from Venezuela, Ecuador, and Nicaragua, this group represented just a small fraction of the diverse range of nationalities attempting to enter the United States.

The data from Customs and Border Protection revealed a significant increase in border encounters in December compared to previous years. Of particular concern were the statistics related to migrants on the Terror Watch List detained between ports of entry along the southwest border. The numbers have been rising steadily over the years, with 169 individuals detained last year alone.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has taken an unyielding stance on border security, launching Operation Lone Star three years ago. Abbott has allocated substantial resources toward building a wall, deploying troops, and even busing migrants to so-called sanctuary cities in other states. While some have criticized his approach as unreasonable or heartless, Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz believes that busing has been an effective policy.

Despite efforts from state officials like Abbott, there remains a lack of coordination between the state and federal government. Congressman Henry Cuellar emphasizes the importance of collaboration, stating that the state should not work against the federal government. However, the issue of border security has persisted for decades, regardless of which party controls the House or Senate.

The current situation at the Texas-Mexico border is a human tragedy that needs bipartisan solutions. House Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Michael McCaul recognizes that it will take all sides working together to effectively address the crisis. The delegation’s visit to the border aimed to shed light on the urgency of the situation and spur bipartisan action.

The fabric of the nation is at stake, and the consequences of inaction are dire.
