Expert Flight Attendant Shares Tips for Nervous Flyers: How to Calm Turbulence Fears

Flight attendant Rhia Kerr, who works for Ryanair, has become an internet sensation after sharing her advice for nervous flyers. In a TikTok video that has now amassed over 2.5 million views, Kerr offers tips on how to calm oneself during turbulence on an airplane.

In the video, Kerr explains that turbulence is a sudden shift in airflow that can be felt as jolts or vibrations inside the aircraft. She points out that when experiencing turbulence, our brains struggle to comprehend the feeling of being out of control, which triggers a fear response. However, Kerr reassures viewers that airplanes are designed to withstand turbulence and that there is no need to panic.

Kerr provides some practical tips to combat turbulence fears. She suggests using noise-canceling headphones to distract oneself from unsettling noises made by the aircraft. Additionally, she recommends writing a list of things to do or exciting moments that will happen upon landing, as a way to divert attention from the turbulence. Kerr also advises finding breathing exercises on platforms like YouTube or TikTok and practicing them during turbulence.

The flight attendant emphasizes that it is not uncommon for nervous flyers to inform the airplane crew about their anxiety. By doing so, the crew can keep an eye on the passenger in case turbulence occurs. Kerr also recommends asking the crew about the possibility of turbulence before the flight, as they are likely to have been briefed on the matter.

Kerr emphasizes that her main priority as a flight attendant is to ensure the safety of passengers and aircraft. She mentions that she has undergone extensive training to be qualified for her role. Kerr reiterates that aircraft cannot fall out of the sky due to turbulence, as the laws of physics keep them suspended in the air. She assures viewers that they are in safe hands.

To further support Kerr’s advice, data from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reveals that in 2023, 20 people were seriously injured due to turbulence, including passengers and crew. However, it is essential to note that this is a relatively small number compared to the approximately 2.9 million passengers who fly in and out of the United States every day across 45,000 flights, according to the FAA.

The FAA recommends keeping seat belts fastened at all times and listening to pilots and flight attendants during unexpected turbulence. These measures can help ensure the safety and well-being of passengers.
