Through this partnership, Amazon Pharmacy will offer two-day deliveries to eligible patients who order certain drugs from Eli Lilly’s direct sales website.

The popularity of weight loss drugs like Zepbound has been on the rise due to their effectiveness in helping patients lose significant weight over time. However, Eli Lilly has faced challenges in meeting the growing demand for these medications, leading to intermittent shortages in the past year. By teaming up with Amazon Pharmacy, Eli Lilly hopes to improve the availability and accessibility of Zepbound and other drugs.

LillyDirect, which was launched in January, eliminates the need for patients to visit a doctor for a prescription and a pharmacy to fill it. The website connects users with an independent telehealth company that can prescribe certain drugs if they are eligible. Additionally, it offers a home-delivery option for Eli Lilly’s prescribed treatments by partnering with a third-party online pharmacy to fill and deliver prescriptions directly to patients.

The collaboration between Eli Lilly and Amazon Pharmacy is part of a broader trend in the healthcare industry to disrupt the complex system of distributing, pricing, and prescribing drugs in the United States. As companies face political pressure to reduce consumer costs, they are exploring innovative ways to improve the customer experience and provide faster, more convenient access to medications.

Patients who use LillyDirect are not required to utilize the platform’s telehealth services to access the home delivery option. Once a patient receives a prescription for an Eli Lilly drug, they can select LillyDirect as the pharmacy within their provider’s electronic health records system, and the prescription will be routed to LillyDirect for delivery. The majority of prescription drug deliveries will be split between Amazon Pharmacy and Truepill, another online pharmacy partner of Eli Lilly.

In addition to home delivery, Amazon Pharmacy offers 24/7 access to clinical pharmacists for patients who have questions about their medications. This support is particularly important for patients starting weight loss injections like Zepbound, which can have side effects such as nausea and vomiting. This collaboration between Eli Lilly and Amazon is not the first. In August, the two companies worked together to provide coupons for insulin and diabetes medicine on the Amazon Pharmacy platform. The company’s expansion into healthcare also includes the acquisition of primary care provider One Medical.

While Amazon has made cost-cutting measures in its pharmacy and healthcare divisions, it has seen tremendous growth in Amazon Pharmacy, One Medical, and its virtual health clinic. The company’s presence in the healthcare industry continues to expand, with partnerships with major health insurers like Blue Shield of California.
