Edwin Diaz anticipates a commanding performance as he makes long-awaited return to the Mets: Staying true to his previous form.

Edwin Diaz, the star closer for the New York Mets, is ready to make a triumphant return to the team after a lost season due to injury. Diaz, who was close to untouchable in his last season with the Mets, believes he will be able to maintain his dominant form and help the team succeed once again.

Last March, Diaz was at the top of his game as he left to represent Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic. He had just finished a season in which he emerged as one of the best relievers in the game, earning him a record contract for a closer. However, during one of the games in the tournament, Diaz suffered a torn patellar tendon in his right knee and had to undergo surgery and a prolonged rehab.

Despite his quick recovery, the Mets decided not to bring Diaz back for a September cameo in the 2023 season. The team wanted to give him more time to fully recover and prepare for the upcoming season. Diaz, who was the toast of Citi Field in 2022 with a 1.31 ERA, 32 saves, and 118 strikeouts, understands the team’s decision and is grateful for the extra year to get ready for 2024.

President of baseball operations David Stearns acknowledges that replicating Diaz’s historic level of production from 2022 will be difficult, but he expects Diaz to be a very good pitcher for the team based on his health and determination. Diaz’s impact on the team was evident last season when the Mets struggled without him and ended up becoming sellers at the trade deadline due to bullpen deficiencies. Diaz believes that if he had been able to pitch, the team would have performed better.

Despite low-key offseason moves by the Mets, projections suggest that they will just hover above .500 this season. However, Diaz remains optimistic and shares his teammates’ expectation of making it to the playoffs. He is determined to give his all in every game and help the team succeed.

Looking ahead, Diaz will evaluate whether he wants to participate in the World Baseball Classic again when it returns in 2026. For now, his focus is on his team and performing at the highest level possible. With his return to the mound, the Mets hope to regain their competitive edge and make a strong push for the playoffs once again.
