Witnesses and police reports indicate that Grubert, hailing from Piermont in Rockland County, was racing another individual when he became distracted, looking away from his path. This moment of inattention proved catastrophic; upon realizing he was about to collide with another jet ski, Grubert abandoned his vessel, which subsequently crashed into a jet ski operated by 45-year-old Walter Wodzien. On board Wodzien’s craft were two young children, aged 7 and 8.
The impact was severe. Both children were thrown from the jet ski upon collision and required immediate rescue. The Madeira Beach Fire Department responded promptly, recovering the two from the water. Tragically, one child sustained life-threatening injuries while the other suffered injuries deemed non-life-threatening.
