Dogs in New York City are all dressed up with nowhere to go after the cancellation of the 2nd annual Pet Gala at NYU. The event, which was scheduled to take place on May 6, coinciding with the famous Met Gala, was called off on Friday. The cancellation came on the same day that 13 protestors were arrested and an encampment was removed from the NYU campus by the NYPD.
The Pet Gala, organized by NYU Faculty Housing Happenings, has not yet set a new date for the event. However, the coutured canines of the city are eagerly awaiting the announcement so they can show off their lavish, celebrity-inspired outfits. Among them are Hey Hey and his daughter Dee Dee, owned by Seira Soraya. Hey Hey will dress as Rihanna, wearing a replica of her white floral Valentino gown from last year’s Met Gala. Dee Dee will be dressed as Taylor Swift in a similar outfit to the one she wore during an Eras Tour performance.
Seira Soraya, an actress and dancer from Hell’s Kitchen, has experience with her pups being in the spotlight. When she showed a picture of Hey Hey to the crew of the show “And Just Like That,” he was cast in an episode. Soraya mentioned that her dogs love being on the red carpet and enjoy socializing with others.
Dianne Ferrer, a resident of Marine Park in Brooklyn, has two dog models named Harley and Cassie. Harley, a French bulldog, will be dressed in an outfit inspired by Sarah Jessica Parker’s 2015 Met Gala look. Cassie, a Doodle mix, will dress as Cher from her iconic 1986 Oscars appearance. Ferrer, who used to work as an art teacher in the Garment District, made the costumes herself. She mentioned that her four-legged friends are used to getting dressed up and being in front of the camera due to their work in commercials and movie sets.
Melissa Mercado, a resident of Sunset Park, has a Yorkie named Louie who will be dressing as James Bond for the Pet Gala. Louie is a content creator and often collaborates with brands like Petco. According to Mercado, Louie is comfortable in front of the camera and loves to pose. He even wore his suit to a wedding before.
Gladys Rivera from Midtown West revealed that her blue Chihuahua, Gia Diamond Soto, will be dressed as Kate Beckinsale from the Cannes Film Festival. The outfit, inspired by a green Zuhair Murad beaded tulle ensemble worn by the actress, was created by Rivera’s mother, who is a fashion designer. Gia enjoys being in front of the camera and is described as a diva who loves to pose.
It’s clear that these dogs are ready to strut their stuff on the red carpet, despite the cancellation of the Pet Gala. They enjoy getting dressed up, socializing, and being in front of the camera.
