Surveillance video footage has surfaced, revealing the harrowing moments leading up to a fatal car crash in Boston. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning in the vicinity of I-93 and Frontage Road. In the video, taken after the crash, the car can be seen engulfed in flames, upside down on the Exit 16 off-ramp from I-93, with debris strewn across the roadway. A separate video captured the seconds before the crash, as the car traveled along the Massachusetts Avenue Connector toward its intersection with Frontage Road. The vehicle collided with a concrete barrier and damaged fencing before plummeting off the overpass and bursting into flames.
Tragically, the driver of the car did not survive the crash. According to Boston Fire Department Commissioner Paul Burke, witnesses initially mistook the scene for a building fire due to the extensive smoke emanating from the burning vehicle. Commissioner Burke expressed his condolences, stating, “It’s a tragedy. It’s very sad. Any time anybody passes away, it’s terrible.” He also highlighted a potential silver lining, emphasizing that it was fortunate no other vehicles were underneath the overpass when the car fell.
Aerial footage from SKY7-HD showed the charred remnants of the car, with firefighters still present at the scene. State police troopers were also in attendance, and personnel from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner were conducting investigations. The area surrounding the wreckage was cordoned off with tents for further examination.
MassDOT crews arrived at the scene around noon, and by 1 p.m., the car had been towed away. The affected area was fully reopened to traffic later that afternoon. One eyewitness, Kathleen Donohue, described her shock at witnessing the aftermath of the crash while commuting to work: “I was just driving to the city for work, and I just saw a bunch of smoke. Then there was a state trooper blocking off the highway, and there was a car on fire. It’s unfortunate something like that happened.”
