Boston City Council Holiday Party Controversy: Invite Sent to All Instead of Elected Leaders of Color

A holiday celebration in Boston sparked controversy when an invite meant for elected leaders of color was mistakenly sent to the entire Boston City Council. The incident, which occurred via email, drew criticism and raised concerns about racial divisions within City Hall.

The Mistaken Invitation

7NEWS obtained an initial email sent to all city councilors, inviting them and a guest to the “Electeds of Color Holiday Party.” However, fifteen minutes later, another email was sent, rescinding the invite to the white councilors and apologizing for any offense caused.

An Honest Mistake

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu defended the party, stating that the mistaken invitation was an honest mistake that could happen to anyone. She emphasized that all Boston City Council members receive invitations to various events and holiday parties.

Racial Divisions in City Hall

Councilor Frank Baker expressed his concerns about the incident, highlighting it as an example of the racial divisions within City Hall. However, Wu suggested that some individuals may not have had all the information and could be confused or worried about being excluded from celebrations.

Support for the Party

Despite the controversy, other elected officials attending the party expressed their disappointment that the holiday spirit was overshadowed by the invite mishap. State Representative Russell Holmes pointed out that this was a historic moment with the first woman mayor and a person of color in Boston’s leadership.

Electeds of Color Group

Boston City Councilors who are members of the Electeds of Color group defended the organization, stating that it has been hosting parties for its members for years. They emphasized that these events aim to create spaces for individuals with shared experiences to come together.
