Colorado State Trooper Cpl. Tye Simcox found himself in a harrowing situation when he became the target of a senseless and “targeted” attack while parked on the side of a highway in Westminster. The incident unfolded when the gunman, without any apparent motive, began firing at the 16-year veteran as he drove past the patrol car. Undeterred, Simcox sprang into action to protect himself and the community.
Chief of the state patrol, Matthew Packard, described the gunman’s audacity as he continued to shoot at Simcox even after pulling his Chevrolet pickup truck over to the left side of the highway. It was a brazen display of violence that could have ended in tragedy. However, Simcox, displaying incredible courage and composure, immediately exited his patrol car and returned fire. In a remarkable display of marksmanship, Simcox managed to strike and ultimately kill the suspect who was attacking him.
During the shootout, Simcox was wounded in his lower right arm. Despite his injury, he quickly applied a tourniquet to the gunshot wound before being transported to the hospital. Fortunately, his injuries were not life-threatening, and he was released later that same day.
