In the sweltering heat of Kingwood, Texas, where temperatures frequently soar into the upper 90s, the absence of air conditioning can turn a challenging environment into a nearly unbearable one. This is the unfortunate reality faced by Spectacular Kids ABA Therapy and Consulting, a clinic dedicated to serving children with autism and developmental differences. The clinic recently found itself in a predicament when two of its air conditioning units were stolen, prompting a wave of distress that rippled through the lives of both staff and families.
Dana Harris, the CEO and Founder of the clinic, recounted the moment they discovered the theft. “We noticed the two AC units were stolen on Wednesday,” she said, noting that the Houston Police Department was promptly alerted. The officer on the scene speculated that the thieves may have targeted the units for their copper components, a common motivation behind such thefts that has become increasingly prevalent in urban areas. In fact, a study by the National Insurance Crime Bureau revealed that copper thefts have surged, with many businesses falling prey to similar crimes.
The immediate effects of the theft were palpable. “The day that this occurred, we had to close,” Harris explained. Without air conditioning, the therapy rooms became inhospitable, forcing the clinic to cancel services that day. “Our babies didn’t get services that day. Our staff didn’t receive pay that day,” she lamented. For children with autism, routine and stability are paramount; any disruption can lead to increased anxiety and regression in their development.
The situation also forced the clinic to make significant adjustments, moving their services to other areas of the building. However, this was not without its challenges. “It is definitely a lot tighter. There’s more kiddos in the room. It’s a little bit louder,” Harris noted. Such conditions are not conducive to the focused, calm environment that is essential for effective therapy.
From a financial standpoint, the impact of the theft has been severe. The cost to replace the two stolen units is approximately $34,000—a staggering amount for any organization, particularly one focused on providing specialized care to vulnerable populations. “That’s not something that we can just pull out of our pockets,” Harris said. Fortunately, their landlord has stepped in to help expedite the replacement process, allowing the clinic to repay the costs in manageable installments.
In an effort to prevent future incidents, Harris is contemplating the installation of security cages around the new air conditioning units once they are installed. “It definitely puts you in an uncomfortable space. This is my second home,” she reflected, expressing the emotional toll of feeling violated in a place that is meant to be a sanctuary for children and families.
As the clinic hopes for the arrival of new air conditioning units soon, the incident serves as a reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by community-focused organizations. It underscores the importance of community support and resilience in the face of adversity. Harris’s determination to restore normalcy for her clients reflects a broader truth—when the community comes together, it can overcome even the most disheartening challenges.
