Chris Harrison Breaks Silence on Departure from ‘The Bachelor’ Franchise
After hosting ‘The Bachelor’ for 19 years, Chris Harrison has finally spoken out about his exit from the show in 2021. During an episode of former ‘Bachelorette’ contestant Jason Tartick’s podcast, ‘Trading Secrets,’ Harrison revealed that he was grateful for leaving the show when he did due to the toxic environment it had become. His departure came after defending Rachael Kirkconnell, a contestant from Season 25, when photos of her attending a plantation-themed sorority party surfaced online in 2018.
Harrison described his experience as tumultuous and horrifying, stating that he wouldn’t wish it upon anyone. He felt the need to remove himself from the franchise because of the toxicity. While he believes they could have resolved the situation amidst the backlash, he ultimately made the decision to step away.
Despite the challenges he faced, Harrison expressed pride in how he handled the situation and acknowledged that the show had been a blessing in many ways, including financially and in changing his life and his children’s lives.
However, Harrison admitted that he wasn’t prepared to leave the show at that time. He had to mourn the loss of something he didn’t intend to exit so abruptly. Although he received immediate offers to return, he chose to take a break and reconnect with himself and his wife.
Following his defense of Kirkconnell, Harrison issued an apology for perpetuating racism and causing harm. He also apologized to Rachel Lindsay, a former ‘Bachelorette’ contestant who initially brought up the resurfaced images of Kirkconnell. He expressed gratitude to Bachelor Nation for holding him accountable and promised to do better.
Harrison’s departure from the franchise resulted in an eight-figure payoff and an agreement not to disclose any insider information. He has since been replaced by Jesse Palmer as the host of ‘The Bachelor.’
