Chino XL, Renowned Rapper and Actor, Passes Away at 50

Chino XL, a versatile artist known for his contributions to rap music and acting, tragically passed away on Sunday morning at the age of 50. While the cause of his death has not been disclosed, his family released a statement on his Instagram page, revealing that he passed away at his home.

Born Derek Keith Barbosa in The Bronx in 1974, Chino XL grew up in East Orange, New Jersey. He adopted the name “Chino” from his childhood nickname. At just 16 years old, he signed with Rick Rubin’s Def American Recordings through Warner Bros in 1991. Before launching his solo career, he collaborated with Kerri Chandler to form Art of Origin.

Chino’s debut solo album, Here To Save You All, was released in 1996 and featured a mix of conventional rap tracks and autobiographical songs. Throughout his career, he released several more albums, including I Told You So (2001), Poison Pen (2006), Something Sacred (2008), Ricanstruction: The Black Rosary (2012), and God’s Carpenter (2023), each showcasing his unique style and lyrical prowess.

In addition to his musical endeavors, Chino also pursued acting. He made his film debut in Barrio Wars (2002) and went on to appear in The Beat (2003), Alex & Emma (2003), The Young and the Restless (2004), Reno 911! (2004), and CSI: Miami.

Chino leaves behind a legacy as a loving father. His daughters expressed their admiration for him, stating that although he was known as the “King of Punchlines” and the “Puerto Rican Superhero,” the most important title he held was “Girl Dad.” They emphasized his strength, straightforwardness, and realistic nature, and expressed that their main feeling now is that their father is at peace, bringing them peace as well.

The family has requested privacy during this difficult time, mentioning that details about a memorial will be shared in the future. Chino is survived by his four children, stepson, five grandchildren, mother, and former partner. His impact on the music and acting industries will be remembered and cherished by his fans and loved ones alike.
