Child Rescued from Burning Building in Everett: Heroic Actions of Firefighters and City Workers
In a dramatic incident, firefighters in Everett, Massachusetts, successfully rescued a child from a burning building on Wednesday morning. The fire chief reported that the child was trapped on the third floor of a home located on Hancock Street. Thanks to the swift actions of the firefighters, both the child and a firefighter who sustained injuries were promptly taken to the hospital for treatment.
The heroic efforts did not stop there. Two brave employees from the Everett Department of Public Works, Jesse Winocur and Jason Papa, risked their lives by rushing into the burning building to assist those still inside. Winocur recounted their experience, stating, “Looked up and I saw smoke coming through the roof, so I told him to stop. So we stopped in the middle of the road — we both got out, ran inside, kicked in doors.” The dense smoke made visibility extremely difficult, with Winocur adding, “Couldn’t see a foot in front of you. Flames and the black smoke, it was like hitting a wall. Burning, coughing, it was bad. It was a bad fire.”
Despite the hazardous conditions, Winocur and Papa persevered, determined to help anyone in need. “People started filing out as we were banging on doors. Couldn’t see no more. The smoke was black. My eyes were burning. We finally got out. As we were coming out, the firefighter was coming in. We told him we couldn’t see no more, there might be somebody up there still,” Papa explained.
Fortunately, everyone managed to evacuate the building before the situation worsened. However, firefighters continued to work diligently at the scene to ensure complete safety. Both the injured firefighter and the rescued child suffered non-life threatening injuries. While the firefighter has been released from the hospital after receiving medical care, the child continues to receive treatment. Winocur expressed his admiration for the firefighter’s bravery, stating, “He went up and saved the little girl. He’s a hero. She would’ve passed if it wasn’t for him.”
The actions of these selfless city workers have garnered immense praise from the community. One neighbor exclaimed, “To go in? Incredible. It’s amazing that somebody would just do that on the spur of the moment, just race right in.” The willingness of these individuals to put their lives on the line to protect others is truly admirable.
Unfortunately, the fire resulted in significant damage to the three-story building, leaving many residents displaced. Sue Decarney, one of the affected individuals, shared her distress, saying, “It’s not a very comfortable situation, even more on the day before the Fourth of July, it’s just awful.” The Red Cross is providing assistance to approximately 14 to 15 displaced individuals, helping them find temporary accommodations.
