Chiefs Offensive Tackles Arrested for Marijuana Possession: Kansas City’s Troubling Offseason Continues

Kansas City Chiefs offensive tackles Wanya Morris and Chukwuebuka Godrick have found themselves in legal trouble, adding to the team’s already troubled offseason. The two players were arrested late Thursday evening in Johnson County, Kansas for misdemeanor marijuana possession. They were booked early Friday morning and released in the afternoon after posting a $2,500 bond.

Both Morris and Godrick pleaded not guilty to their charges and are scheduled to appear in court on May 23. The Kansas City Chiefs organization is aware of the situation, according to Brad Gee, the VP of Football Communications.

Wanya Morris, who was drafted by the Chiefs in the third round from Oklahoma, was expected to compete for the starting left tackle position this season. Meanwhile, Chukwuebuka Godrick joined the team through the NFL’s International Player Pathway last season and had a chance to secure a spot this year. However, their future with the Chiefs may depend on potential repercussions from the team and the NFL.

This recent arrest is just another legal issue for the Chiefs following their back-to-back Super Bowl wins. Rashee Rice, a first-year receiver, is facing eight felony charges and a $1 million lawsuit after being involved in a multi-car crash while reportedly racing a Lamborghini in April. Rice turned himself in to the police after a warrant for his arrest was issued. The accident resulted in multiple injuries and left a young boy traumatized.

In addition to the crash, Rice allegedly assaulted a photographer at a Dallas nightclub. These incidents put Rice at risk of suspension by the NFL.

Kicker Harrison Butker has also faced controversy for his commencement speech at Benedictine College in Kansas. In his speech, he criticized President Biden, made derogatory remarks about the LGBTQ community, and belittled women’s career aspirations after graduation.

Despite these off-field issues, the reigning champion Chiefs will begin their season on September 5 against the Ravens. Hopefully, the team can focus on their on-field performance and overcome the challenges they have faced during the offseason.
