Curi’s artistic journey began in his childhood, rooted in a love for music. “It was around 8 or 12,” he recalls, reminiscing about his early days of creating a fictional rock band with his brothers. However, as he discovered the importance of visuals in music, his interest shifted toward graphic design. He started crafting flyers, t-shirts, and album art for their imagined gigs, paving the way for his distinctive style. As design technology evolved in the early 2000s, Curi honed his craft, developing a colorful aesthetic that would define his work as a visual artist.

Describing his artistic process, Curi likens drawing to a physical experience, akin to a game or puzzle. “You grab a pencil, you have paper, and connecting line with line is kind of like a game,” he explains. This playful approach manifests in his illustrations, featuring quirky, colorful figures in dynamic compositions. Interestingly, his visual art has become a vital means of communication, especially since he often struggles with verbal expression. “When I say that my hands speak better than my mouth… I struggle a lot with speaking,” he admits. This challenge has only deepened his appreciation for the solitary moments spent in his studio, allowing him to express himself freely through art.

Curi’s career trajectory has been nothing short of remarkable. Reflecting on his journey, he expresses gratitude for the opportunities he’s received, including his work with Disney. “It is incredible to think where I started, you know? And the possibilities that I have now,” he says, embodying the spirit of perseverance and creativity. He noted, “‘Cultura Sin Limites’ to me presented a challenge… I wanted to create a body of work that will represent us, the whole Latino community, represent the way that we connect with each other.”

He recognizes the warmth and openness inherent in Latino culture, where family and friends play integral roles in one’s life. “I feel there’s something about Latinos that we extend our families,” he points out, emphasizing the community-centric nature of their culture.

Curi’s artistic journey is complemented by that of his wife, fellow artist Macarena Luzi. The couple’s creative paths intertwined during their teenage years when Curi formed a band with Luzi’s brother. Their love story began with a serendipitous coffee outing, which blossomed into a deep partnership both personally and professionally. Luzi’s work, characterized by bold colors and abstract gestures, harmonizes with Curi’s vision, as they both prioritize themes of family, community, and emotional expression in their art. “Coming from South America, we’re very much into expressing our feelings, how family is so important, how community is so important, and we don’t hold back,” Luzi shares.

Luzi also champions the importance of building a supportive artistic community. “If I were to give advice to somebody that wants to do art: surround yourself with good friends, good people,” she advises aspiring artists. This sentiment echoes the couple’s collaborative spirit, as they work together to paint a vivid portrait of a limitless and colorful Latino culture.
